ASIAGO, Italy — Seven amateur athletes represented Team USA at the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships in Asiago, Italy, on Feb. 11, as Sheri Schrock (Cohasset, Minn.) and Tracy DiSabato-Aust collected medals in their respective age groups.

Winter triathlon is a unique multisport discipline that combines running, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Sunday’s event was held at the Centro di Fondo Campolongo, a Nordic skiing venue in the heart of the Venetian mountains. The age-group course featured a 4-kilometer run and 7-kilometer bike on snow-packed trails, followed by a 6-kilometer ski.

Schrock, who claimed the women’s 60-64 age group world title in 2018, grabbed the silver medal in the women’s 65-69 division. She finished with a time of 1 hour, 29 minutes, less than four minutes behind world champion Karin Schulz of Germany (1:25:01). Rounding out the top-three was Italy’s Rossella Carletti, who took bronze in 1:37:06.

DiSabato-Aust, competing in her first Winter Triathlon World Championships, claimed bronze in the women’s 60-64 division with a time of 1:26:32. She shared the podium with gold medalist Waltraud Ritter of Austria (1:19:29) and silver medalist Luisella Iabichella of Italy (1:24:28).

Also earning a top-10 finish for Team USA was Christian Otto (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who took eighth in the men’s 50-54 division. His time of 1:01:51 was less than 10 minutes back from the world champion, Frode Engelund of Norway.

In addition to age-group competition, the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships featured races for elite, junior, U23 and paratriathlon athletes, as well as an elite 2x2 mixed relay. Complete results from all events are available at triathlon.org.
